How Does Your Garden Grow?

I've made a few sad attempts at gardening over the past couple years. Despite my lack of success with growing my own foods, I've decided to not let that stop me and this year we are expanding! After all, year 1 the apartment balcony was shady, and year 2 I didn't water. So this year, with sun and watering, I'm hoping to reap a successful harvest.

We've decided to do a 4x4 square-foot garden without the raised bed to save money on buying all the soil. We did get some manure to mix in with our current soil to increase its quality.

Here's our little spot, waiting for its manure, seeds and transplants!

And here's the current planned layout.

If all goes well this year, I'm hoping to expand into more root vegetables next year, like carrots, potatoes, onions and garlic.

That's so exciting - ours is a bunch of pots with different seeds in it - Really we need to give the garden a whole bunch of TLC but it's either been too cold, too wet or we've been too busy to do anything.

We've had trouble too finding a weekend that's both dry and warm-ish. Even if it's not raining during the weekend, it's rained so much during the week lately we still can't get much yard stuff done on the weekend! I'm hoping I can start planting and tackle some of the weeds in our flower beds next week. Good luck with your garden! :)

That's awesome! I really wish I could do something like this but that's just impossible living in the desert.

How fun! And it will be super therapeutic and relaxing!

You might consider putting your herbs in a separate pot or two to give the other veggies some space to expand. You'll also be able to bring them inside in the winter.

If you think space is still going to be a problem, you could plant the lettuces very soon (they taste best as babies) and then dig them up in midsummer when they get too big and bitter. That way your other veggies will be able branch out just as they're getting big.

My garden grows at Kroger. :-)

Excellent suggestions! I'm definitely planning on putting some rosemary in pots since those make pretty bushes anyways.
